The IRS typically does not send acknowledgment notices for individual tax returns or documents they receive.
- If you filed your taxes electronically, your accountant should inform you of the acceptance of your return. However, acceptance does not guarantee that the IRS has processed or reviewed your return.
- If you are due a refund from the IRS, you can check on the status of your refund on their website.
- If you need to mail physical documents to the IRS, such as amended returns, Streamlined amnesty returns or additional documentation, consider using certified mail with a return receipt or a trackable mail service. This can provide proof of delivery. You can find the IRS recommended private delivery services here: Private Delivery Services PDS
The IRS may send correspondence if they need additional information or if there are issues with your return. Be sure to respond promptly to any IRS notices or letters.
While the IRS doesn't typically send acknowledgment notices for every document they receive, we find that the phrase “no news is good news” best applies to sending in your IRS documents. There is no need to worry if you have not received notice from the IRS.
