Can I amend my Federal tax return and get a refund?

Yes, you can amend your Federal tax return and potentially receive a refund if you realize you've made a mistake or left off something important on your original return.

However, there are specific time limits within which you must file the amended return to be eligible for a refund. The IRS requires you to file an amended return within three years from the date of filing your original return or within two years from the date of paying the tax, whichever is later. If you filed your return earlier than the April tax deadline, count from that deadline.
